I am thinking about getting an r9 270x but want to know if it will be enough to run BF4 and other top titles such as COD, Skyrim, MineCraft, Day- Z etc on high/ultra settings on a single 1920x1080p monitor but also lasting me a couple of years while maintaining this performance or would it be better to save the extra money and go for the r9 280x or gtx 770 as I don't want to spend to much money on a graphics card as I wont be gaming on my computer all the time.

270X can run ultra settings on those games but with decent frames like 40-50FPS. If you want more then definitely go with a GTX 770 and it will max out ultra settings at 60FPS.

Yes you can get 60FPS on ultra, but it depends what system you are running it to. And also it should last for a couple of years. If you want more, you can SLI it down the road. Just make sure your system is capable and most important is the power supply.

My build is - i5 4570k 3.4ghz, corsair 8gb 1866mhz lp memory, corsair 750w modular psu, asus maximus hero iv mobo, gigabyte sumo case. Just not sure whether to pay £250 for a graphics card but as you say if it will be able to play most games at ultra settings and last a couple of years then I guess its worth it.
