hey guys, i built my new rig and i have a hopefully quick question about inputs.

i have an asrock z87 extreme4 and an evga gtx 570.

i have dvi out from the 570 to my monitor and i wanted to do hdmi out from the asrock to my receiver but when i plug in the hdmi i'm getting no hdmi choice in windows (8.1 64 bit if it matters). it isn't showing it as plugged in in the bios either, and i didn't see any audio or hdmi options in the bios but it's very possible i'm missing something. i updated the chipset and audio drivers.

if i need to use my hdmi (mini) out from my 570 like i was before that's fine but i was hoping to take advantage of the motherboard audio - or would it do that anyway even if i run it through the gpu?

thanks in advance.

Solution

It probably is Not going to work. The hdmi out on the mobo is for your Intel CPU integrated graphics(and the audio associated with it). If I am correct, and I might not be, the Intel graphics are disabled when using the Nvidia card thus the audio portion too. Again, I might be mistaken, but you can use one or the other, but not both at the same time.
Try the S/PDIF Optical port out to your S/PDIF in port on your receiver; that should work.

thank you for the reply, if it was just audio that would be ok but i need to use hdmi because i am running out to a receiver connected to a plasma tv.

does anyone know whether the above post is correct, and if so, whether i am taking advantage of my motherboard audio technology if i run sound through the gpu?

otherwise, it seems pointless to even have it since most people who game probably aren't using the integrated graphics... i would be surprised that more people aren't running into the same problem...

Your repost clarifies this a bit. When you run HDMI from your GPU you are Not using the on-board audio, but the HD Audio that is part of your video card. You are actually removing some workload on the CPU and transferring it to the GPU. I am sure you know that the HD HDMI Audio is activated through Control Panel>Sound>Playback.
You are correct, most people gaming are NOT using the Intel HD Integrated graphics; Though it has improved immensely since its introduction it still cannot compare to a discrete video card like your 570 etc.
But there is a place for it in machines that will never be used for intense graphics and gaming, and integrated graphics are going to improve some more.
I am a bit curious now. What are you trying to stream to the t.v.? And are you trying to game on the monitor and do something different on the t.v.?

thank you but now i am really confused. i have been told that the motherboard audio is the only audio i have, unless i added in a secondary sound card, and that the hdmi port on my video card is going to pass the exact same audio through it as the hdmi port on the extreme4.

what i'm trying to clarify is whether i should be able to use the dvi out on the 570 and the hdmi out on the asrock - i watch movies on the plasma while i game.

i have an email out to user@asrockamerica.com and will update this thread with any reply. thanks!

I must say I don't have an answer for that. It seems logical that it should work, but logical is not always correct when dealing with computers (lol). If you look at your sound menu that I mentioned you should see a listing for NVIDIA HDMI output (maybe several). If I am not mistaken that is a complete "sound system" (for lack of a better description) that only runs when hdmi is hooked up to the card and then to a t.v. or monitor. Similar but not quite the same as having a sound card. Logic (see my 2nd sentence above) says that you should be able to use Intel graphics to a separate device, but that doesn't appear to be possible as you have discrete graphics enabled; to run both would cause enormous conflicts, often crashes.
IMHO the question then becomes; Can you use the HDMI to run a movie, while using the DVI and onboard audio to game - all at the same time. I read your PM, but this may come back to the graphics card; I actually am looking forward to Asrock's reply, should be interesting what they have to say.

My Setup:
CPU: AMD FX-4170
MD: ASUS M5A99X EVO AM3+
GFX: HIS IceQ Turbo Radeon HD 7850 2GB DDR5
RAM: 24GBs at 1866MHZ

I have 2 24 inch 2ms monitors and 1 60" inch HD tv ALL hooked up to my single graphics card. (these all run at 1080p, the monitors are connected with displayport cables, and the tv with an HDMI cable)

I have no issues watching a 1080p movie on the 60", and playing a game like skyrim or loadout on monitor 1 AND ALSO watching a youtube video on monitor 2 at the same time. (I listen to the audio from the monitors on a headset, and have audio coming out from the TV for the movie i'm watching.

Unless you're an audiophile, you likely won't notice any audio problems, GFX cards don't have bad audio, if they did, NOONE would use HDMI.

A soundcard WOULD give you audio out ports for all your speakers (left right center subwoofer ect) and/or an Optical out that you can connect to your receiver.

Thanks +1^

my question then is why do gaming motherboards have audio?

here is my reply from asrock so far:

Thank you - can you clarify why that is the case? I would like to understand. My receiver passes through to my plasma tv monitor. Thank you very much.

Hi Garrett,

Unfortunately, onboard HDMI output must be plugged to monitor. It would not be worked if plug to receiver.

Thank you

Thank you for the reply - to clarify - it is normal for the hdmi in BIOS to not show that it is enabled?

Also, will hdmi out from my gpu and from my motherboard both utilize the extreme4's audio? What I want to do is use dvi from my gpu for the monitor and hdmi from the extreme4 to my audio receiver for sound and movies on my plasma tv - but maybe it doesn't matter which hdmi goes to my receiver? So is it worth enabling iGPU to do this or is my gpu hdmi out using the extreme4 audio?

Thank you again for your reply.

Hi Garrett,

If VGA card is installed onboard VGA will be disabled.

However, onboard VGA can be enabled while using discrete VGA card at BIOS, Advanced, Chipset Configuration, iGPU multi monitor [Enable].

Note: if enable iGPU or onboard VGA will share the system memory.

Thank you

Hi, if I plug my hdmi out (to my receiver) into the AsRock Z87 extreme4 and look in the BIOS, it is not showing anything plugged into it. I am using an evga gtx570. Is this normal? Thank you very much.
