Hello.

I have a laptop Acer Aspire V3-772G, with Win 8.1.
I have two hard disks in this laptop, one SSD unit mounted as C: that contains the system, and one traditional 1TB hard drive mounted as D:

I have a problem with the D: drive. Suddenly, it disappeared from the file explorer. I tried to run diskmgmt.msc but it does not appear there. I have some important data in this drive, that I would like to recover.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Daniele

It may be worth popping the access panel to the drive and verifying it is firmly plugged into the connector. If it is, and the laptop has simply stopped "seeing" the drive, you might try attaching the drive to another computer and see if it is detected there.

Do you have $500-$2000 to spend getting it back or a backup of the data somewhere?

I tried to follow bigpinkdragon's suggestion, and I turned my laptop upside-down to open the panel. Unfortunately a very little screwdriver is needed to do that, and I don't have it with me know. Then I turned my laptop again, and I booted it... and my hard disk reappered.

So I think it is a problem of hardware, the hard disk is probably not connected very well, and moving it can change things. As soon as I find a suitable screwdriver I will try to fix it.

The hard disk should be secured by one or more screws internally. If you are not the original owner, or somebody has worked on the machine in the past, it's possible the hard drive is no longer secured as it should be. Provided the drive is SATA, no electrical damage would occur if it disconnected while powered, but you could be looking at potential DATA lost due to contents of buffers not being written out during a drive disconnect. I wouldn't tinker much with the DATA on the drive until you resolve the issue, unless there is nothing of significant value.
