Trouble with legacy nvidia driver

So I'm running a Geforce FX 5800 now on a Dimension 4600 with 2.5GB Ram and a Celeron D 3.06ghz* (Miss-read the processor name.) (got it for free).

The operating system is Linux Mint 13 LTS XFCE, and I have done the proper removal of medibuntu from the repository of course.

Anyway the issue is upon installing the proper nvidia legacy driver, I can neither properly change display settings through the regular control panel, or through nvidia xserver which states the driver is "too old" despite it being the LAST legacy driver out that has any support for Geforce FX and thus there not being a "newer" driver for it.

I'd really rather not have to switch back to Windows. but if this can't be fixed, thanks to nvidias blasted drivers I just might have to.

Solution:
1) Consider upgrade to mint 16, mint 13 is pretty old.
2) Do not use Nvidia proprietary driver. Use opensource driver. "nouveau"

I guess I'll try that.
but I will not be moving to mint 16.
Mint 13 is still receiving updates and is NOT as old as you are making it sound.
Pretty old would be along the lines of Mint 9. Not that I didn't love Mint 9, actually I loved it.
It worked a-lot better than some of the releases that came after it from what I noticed at least in stability.

In-fact, Mint 13 is supported until April 2017, why would I swap it with a release that's only supported until July of this year? To burn a disc, and install it only to have to upgrade just a couple months from now? It'd be a complete waste.

Yes mint 13 receives security updates, but no new software as it is LTS release. If current release works for you then keep it :)

To revert to opensource driver:
  1. sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

BTW next linux mint 17 (built on ubuntu 14.04) will be the next LTS release.

No new software?
Explain then, how I am running the latest release of Google Chrome? Or do you mean things like the latest linux kernel, and xserver, other sensitive internal stuff?

And yes, I know the new LTS release is eventually around the corner, and I will likely grab it. but only after waiting to see and hear of any possible issues and their solutions. Though once I get a new laptop, I'll probably just slap Fedora or Mint Debian on it. Canonicals actions and Plagiarism of the linux communities (not to mention Debians) work hasn't sat well with me.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Yes. This is definition of LTS and of course it has certain merits :)

@RiennaCruzar,

I hope English is not your mother language, otherwise you sound like someone owes something to you... ;(

My apologies it was never my intention to come off as negative.
And yes English is my mother language, given I was born in America.

True that. Honestly, the noveu driver was providing zero hard-ware acceleration support and I couldn't find a work around that didn't involve total gibberish. So I opted to just get the Windows 7 32bit install over-with and use the Vista driver since it's the final one for the FX series and works on 7.

This topic could be closed now actually. There isn't more to ask or say here.
And my new question I need to ask is based around a different topic/subject matter.
