Today 1080p monitors are common place and considered defacto.

I'm considering upgrading my monitor this year and I'm wondering if I should get 2560x1440 or go with a 2560x1600. Which format will become the new 1080p for the next few years?

Plus are there any whatouts or concerns with my current GPU which is a GTX760?

Hi there,

Speaking from personal experience: One look at gaming at 1440p and you will NEVER go back to 1080. I was gaming at 1440 on a single GTX 670 at medium setting and to pretty much everyone 1440p@medium settings looked better than 1080p@ultra.

I would HIGHLY recommend a QNIX monitor, they can be had for 300$-350$ and can be overclocked to 120Hz!!

I would say go with a 1440p and plan on adding a second GTX 760 in SLI in the future, you should be all set for 1440p!

Those two resolution are really similar with 1600p being the obvious winner.
2560x1440 has an aspect ratio of 16:9 just like 1080p, whereas 1600p uses 8:5. Therefore, if you ever want to dual monitors, it would be easier with 1440p than 1600p because of 1080p being very common and 1440p can just downscale to 1080p with trouble.

In addition, 1440p tends to be more common and cheaper.

Well, you aren't going to be able to game well at all at either of those resolutions.

1600p is rare and way overpriced. 1440p costs a fair bit of money to get a good monitor.

I would personally save up my money for the Asus SWIFT, which will be 1440p and 120Hz.

That being said, with just a 760, I wouldn't even consider an upgrade beyond 1080p yet if you're gaming; save your money and put it towards upgrades in the future. (Say, when maxwell releases, get an 880.)

Thanks for the information and although the GTX 760 isn't the greatest card available, the monthly guide on this very site claims great 2560x1600 performance: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-review,review-32899-4.html

Forgetting the car for a moment though, and the relative prices of the different formats. Which one will replace 1080 as the next defacto standard? Or maybe it's going to be one of the 4K formats that reigns for the next few years.

The card notwithstanding (heck even onboard video supports 2560X1440p; it all depends with what settings your comfortable with, don't expect to game with a 760@1440 on high/ultra settings), I think 1440p will become the new consumer standard, although it will be some time before content becomes widely available. PC and enthusiasts standards evolve very quickly and we can't really say right now if 4K is an upcoming trend, fad, or soon to be standard. Regardless, I do not anyone who has a 4K monitor without running top-end GPU's in SLI/Xfire

That being said, you can't really talk about your monitor without discussing the video card, because they both directly impact the other. I myself game, at 1080 and my next upgrade will be the Asus swift and a maxwell based card. The swift has the features I want, large panel, G-sync, high refresh-rate and 1440, however, I will be waiting until the price drops significantly. Finally, I think it is really all a matter of preference/taste I have some friends that game at 720 on medium settings and their happy as can be.

Here is an intesting article speculating on the future of PC gaming http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/13/the-future-of-pc-gaming-gpus-and-4k-monitors/

Edit: in the review you cited the 770 can only hit 30 to 50fps at 1440 for current AAA games tested. For some anything people 60fps is unacceptable

Edit: just realize you have a 760 not a 770, as you can imagine you will see even lower fps with a 760

1080p will still be a solid choice for at least the next 3 years, after that we will continuously see more 4K coming out and being popular. However, that depends on when the GPU designers decide to implement HDMI 2.0 as many people still don't know that Display Port is the future of desktop monitors and HDMI is the future of TV display.

Yeah, this is probably true that 4k in whatever flavour will become dominant in 3+ years.

Thanks for the answers and opinions guys... sounds like 2560x1440 will become the consumer choice half-way towards 4k choice from here on in. While 2560x1600 is more screen real estate and perhaps the better choice, there is a hit on GPU performance in gaming.

<so now I just need to figure out how to get both a GPU and monitor update past Mrs NMB without her noticing>

I personally (speaking from experience; I have both) would always take 1080p and 120hz over 1440p and 60Hz. Even at the same refresh rate, I would take 1080p instead of 1440p if I were in a situation (like owning a 760) where I wouldn't be able to get smooth play at 1440... turning a 27" monitor down to 1080p looks hideous.

Also, as for the question about what's going to become the new "standard" let me just peer into my crystal ball here...

There's no way of telling. However, I can tell you that if you think that 1080p is going to get replaced as the norm in a few years, you're wrong.
