I recently bought the Diablo2 Battlechest and installed the game (I have the LOD expansion but haven't installed it yet). I installed Diablo2 on Sunday and after following steps to get it running on Windows7 it ran well and was enjoyable to play and was on Monday too.
However last night I shut down my PC before going to bed and now today when I went to play the game it's having problems launching/crashing all the time. All previous settings under Properties are the same: I have the latest patch, I have run the 'D2VdTst' and selected 'Direct3D' as I was suggested to from multiple forums. All these things - like I said - worked before but not any more, so curious as to what to try next and hopefully resolve this problem? I don't want to have to figure things out and have to resolve issues with this game every time i restart/shut down my PC

More about : diablo2 windows7

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers and re-installing the game?

Numanator has got it right. Thats what I would do first is look at the video card drivers. Not sure what would have happened over night though.

Actually to better compatibility run the game in Direct2D (DirectDraw) mode, also make sure to run it with windows XP SP3 compatibility and as administrator, I've been playing it for years in Win7 Ultimate 64bits with that config no issues at all.

I gave that a try to no success still need to update driver as well, but thought I'd try your suggestion first. When I went back to select Direct2D a second time (after the first failed) running the D2VdTst again I got a message that said: Error 22: A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw" I'm thinking I should probably just reinstall Diablo2?

Yeah, D2 is a pain to get working well. DirectDraw doesn't seem to work, D3D kinda works, but I have flickering issues (may be a forced AA setting or something). You can get Glide working via wrappers, but they crash the game from time to time.
