The chipset in my old one was a Z75 and i put in this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293 which is a Z77. I just swapped them out without doing any prep. My computer runs just fine. I am just worried that I will have problems later on down the road. Can anyone share their expertise with a noobie

Hello Jhague49,
I believe you will be just fine as the Z75 and Z77 are of the same generation/silicon, just tuned to different usage scenarios. I do recommend going to intel.com, select support, drivers, and automatically find drivers, just to be sure you are up to date with chipset drivers.

if the license was in it (I am assuming you just dropped the HDD in it and powered on) all you should have to do is tell it to activate online and be done.
As to the Intel chipset, get the drivers off the MoBo support site to start with... this will tell you what is is and then you can use that knowledge to get them off the Intel site

http://nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html Check this program out, I have used it in the past, since its the same hard drive and OS install, it should work to find your 25 digit key.
