Wifi just started lagging, ethernet is fine

For over a year, I've been using a Medialink wireless-n router, 150Nv2 as a range extender. The modem and primary Linksys router are on the south wall. The Medialink is in the center of the home, approx 100 feet from the Linksys (wired via ethernet cable). We have several devices connecting wirelessly on the north wall (approx 30 feet from Medialink router).

I've been using this setup for over a year, and I usually get about 15Mbps with 50ms ping when I do speed tests on my wifi from the north wall. A few weeks ago, the wifi was lagging pretty bad, around 300ms-500ms, and only 3Mbps download. I power cycled the router, which fixed the problem.

It's been happening more often, and power cycling doesn't seem to help. I've not changed any settings on the router or the connected devices. The latency is consistent across all devices connected wirelessly. Connecting via ethernet works fine, no lag whatsoever.

- Nothing has changed, so far as I can tell
- Distance from router has no effect
- Only affecting wifi, ethernet connected devices are fine
- Medialink wifi lags from anywhere in home
- Linksys wifi has no lag or slowness, even when connecting from center of home or from north wall (signal is very weak from north wall, though, which is why we set up the 2nd router as an extender)

I'm assuming the Medialink router is dying, and will need to be replaced. The only reason I haven't' already ordered a new router is the fact that it works fine connected to Ethernet.

Any thoughts? New router time?

the wifi and ethernet are not dependent on each other persay (not counting the LAN port...if that didn't work...nothing will)

yes, the wifi could be going....what is signal strength next to it and as you move away....(signal bars will not automatically update)

other option is change the transmit channel...it may be conflicting with the main router and main might be winning

Signal strength is full, right next to it, and on the north wall. Channels were adjusted when I set up the two routers. Primary is on channel 3, secondary is on channel 9.

I believe I was able to fix the problem. I'm still testing to make sure. It wasn't a consistent issue, so I'm hesitant to say it's resolved, but so far it seems fixed.

It was only happening when the nearby roku was actively streaming. I assumed it was simply a bandwith issue, but I tried power cycling the roku, and the latency was immediately gone.

I'm not sure how the roku could kill wifi for every other device on the router, but that seems to be the problem. The roku hadn't been cycled in at least a month or two, so I'm guessing it was just dropping packets or misfiring wifi signals somehow.

Thanks for your help. Time will tell if this is fixed or not. I tried to delete this post on Monday, but I couldn't figure out how. :)

Glad it is working for you.

How long have you had the roku? If problem just started when you got the roku (which model, are you streaming HD) then the bandwith is probably the issue. I tried looking up your router is it Medialink MWN-WAPR150N? I do not know model of linsys.

If this happens (lagging) try these steps
1) check speed wired/wireless from linksys, if lagging from here could have two possibilities (a. speed from internet not fast enough to stream and do other things....or b) linksys cannot handle load and linksys needs upgrading
2) if linksys performs well then medialink may not be able to handle load and upgrading should fix. if the model of the media link is correct that seems like a basic model and it's speed are on entry level. You could upgrade to something like http://
Not only is the speed better but one like this (you can pick whomever you like but this has option to limit bandwith to certain devices so that they do not hog up the bandwith. Of course you can always go higher in models.

to test try to stream a good HD show and movie (from two sorces/channels/apps/or whatever you choose) and test speed from other devices while it is streaming.

As for closing a thread, I am not sure about that but you can always repost in your own thread that you fixed it so that whoever reads it will see it.

Glad you are working though...take care.
