So she dropped our dell studio 1558 and now doesn't boot. She looked online for answers and thinks the power button may have frayed and wont start because of the circuit wont complete. I tried hooking it up to my desktop by USB 2.0 to SATA but my computer wont recognize it or in computer engagement doesn't show either so I directly hooked it up to the computer and it still doesnt show a new hard drive anywhere I am looking. Am I doing something wrong or is the hard drive toast? any Ideas would help please respond asap, she has finals due tomorrow that weren't backed up.

Solution

plug it in to your desktop again and open my computer to see if its there.if not there is nothing more you can do for it.like i said earlier,if the data is really important there are data recovery companies out there but they are quite expensive.

yes i have it connected by USB 2.0 and didnt work. Tried it directly as well by sata to my motherboard of my desktop. The chkdsk closed before I could look at everything but checked something went through 2 of 3 stages and 3rd went to quickly to see what happened but could this have been my main Hard Drive.

Download and run HDTune and check for bad sectors and disk health.
