Streaming video over LAN causes severe lag

Hey folks, I have a Windows 7 PC that I store all of my movies on (standard-definition AVIs) and I'd like to watch them on my MacBook, but playing them causes severe lag and they're simply unwatchable. Both computers are connected via ethernet to an Asus RT-n56u router. Not sure what the culprit is, but it can't be the network, since it's completely wired. Any ideas?

Solution
I ended up swapping out the motherboard and replaced the cat5 ethernet cable with a cat6 cable, and that has fixed the issue I've been having. Not sure which solution actually fixed the problem, but it works now, so I'm happy.
Try a direct cable between the devices and see if it makes a difference. It is highly unlikely the router is making any difference it is not doing a lot more than connecting the 2 cables together. It actually has a dedicated switching chip in the router for the lan ports that can pass traffic at 1g between the ports.
