I am trying to upgrade my power supply from a 350w to 800w+ power supply. I bought a power supply and it does not have the 4 prong cable for my processor only a 6 prong. I now have no idea to figure out what power supply to buy and if it will be compatible. My computer knowledge is decent but if you can not understand what I am asking I can post pictures too. I appreciate any help.

Just for knowledge I have a base dell inspiron 530 with an upgraded qs 660 quad core processor, 8g of ddr2 ram and trying to put in a gtx 570 video card.

What is the model number of your new PSU?

The 4 pins power connector is the CPU power connector, it could be either 4 pins or 8 pins depending on the PSU. I think 6 pins exist, just very rare.

If you will, please do post the pictures. That eliminates the chance of miscommunication and/or confusion. Thank you!

The 6pin power connector is most likely for the PCIe like the gtx 570 you have. What you may not know is that some high end motherboards often require an 8pin processor connection, not just a 4pin, so powersupplies of the 800w size usually have a 4+4pin just for those motherboards. Check the connectors, 1 of them should be an 8pin looking one that actually splits into 2x 4pins. Use one of those.

Just for your info, a GTX570 only requires a 550w psu with 32A on the 12V rail, so at most you could need would be a good 650w, not a monster psu like 800w.

If you do opt for a newer psu, these are some of the better ones to choose from

IDontUnderstand and Karadjgne hit it on the spot. Thank all of ya'll for your help. The 8 prong split into two and made 4 prongs. I appreciate the help and super excited to use all my new components.
