How can I move DLL's from an old HD to a new HD

Basically as the title says. Installed a new HD and installed windows and have a ton of games on the old HD. But the old HD is getting a bit old and was wondering how would I get windows to recognize or route to the DLL's on the old HD (when playing from the old hard drive slaved or move the programs to the new one)?

- New install of windows because I wasn't able to retrieve the key after a final MOBO failure. (New mobo created a new C: dir for system use and was trying to boot from it, so wasn't able to boot into windows to retrieve it, but new windows copy is the same version as the old, 7 Professional 64 bit)
- Old HD has about 20,000 hours on it and would rather run it for media and other things as its been run for a while; but I am not sure how to access the DLLs on it to play some of my games while I wait for the internet connection.
- I believe its a Direct X dll error most of the time but I am not at home so I cant write down the 2 codes that I have seen. Most of the games generate the same code; d3dx9_90.dll or something similar to that.

Is there a program or a way I can write a file to point windows to the location? Or should I just wait until I have internet again at my new home (2+ weeks maybe) and re-download and install the programs that way?

Thanks for any reply.

DLL files are proprietary to the system and executable files.

Redownload the programs, or see if you can find the install files on the old HD.

Don't just copy the programs over, you won't get the right registry key changes and it will cause all sorts of corruption.

Alright, right now I think from reading other posts that it is possibly Direct X is missing or the version I installed is not as current as the programs were. Right now its a desktop that doesn't have access to the internet so I am unable to redownload the programs as most of them are online. Ill give downloading an offline installer or Direct X a shot later and if it works ill let you know.

Alright will look at that, also I installed the offline installer nad it allowed some games to work but Rome 2 will cut out when loading the campaign or in the middle of a battle. I installed 9.0c i believe from the microsoft site itself. But no error messages, just shuts it down.. maybe Steam's response to not being online?

Steam should allow offline play, but it does require to install some files when you first load a game. You may actually be missing .NET extensions as well.
There's a few Microsoft programs that are native to 7 that need to be installed in XP SP3 in order for more modern software to function.

You should really considering ditching XP for 7 if you are playing Rome 2, considering it supports the GPU friendly DX 11 and you are stuck on the poor-performance of CPU dependent DX9.

Well I do have Windows 7, as said in my original post. However I am only able to find DirectX 9.0c to download an offline installer and havent found the DirectX 11 offline installer which may be causing the problem now.

Something I didn't look at were .Net extensions but I am able to load games from my old HD, but they will crash at times when they maybe need the newer DirectX supported models?

Does anyone know where I could find a DirectX 11 offline installer that I can take back? Still no internet at home, and not going to lug around a desktop to the cafe :)

DX11 should be installed natively? Installing DX9 may be the issue.

Is this a fresh-fresh install, or have you run any patches?

You should at least have SP1

Yes I do have SP1. Well when I installed DX9 it solved the dll problems but now it seems to crash out. So would you happen to know where I would be able to download an offline installer for DirectX11 if there is one?

When I google it, I am not sure I can trust those results.. the only one from Microsoft takes me to a June 2010 downloadable. I will try the option above to try to have windows install the old ones.. worth a try.

Well I checked it out, it does have DirectX 11 installed, thanks for telling me how to verify that. I think the issue is now a steam issue and will chose the solution from one of the above. Thanks.
