Every time I reboot (or turn on) the computer the date and time has been reset to January 2007. I change it to the correct date and time daily but once it turns off and gets turned back on it has reset again. Once I go into the date and time properties screen to automatically sync the time with a windows or interent server, it gives me the message "An error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. The RCP server is unavailable." This problem has happened for 2 weeks now please help.

The battery should be a CR2032.

Thank you so much for the info!! And it does not matter about the computer model/year/ or anything as far as the battery goes? Am I supposed to get the one you suggested?

I think that's pretty much the standard now. It should be easy enough to pop the side panel off your case and see the battery on the motherboard.

yep every motherboard battery i have replaced in the last 7 years has been of the same kind 3v standard.
be aware though that you can buy them in packs of 5 and 10 for a 5er they will last 6 months to a year.
or you can buy 1 for a 5er and it should last 3-5 years if you dont short it while fitting it.

Hi khristi... i too have this exact same problem with my xp os [reset to 1st january 2007 - 1:30am] , the problem started last week when i couldn't open my firefox browser, as a pop up said; my certificate was expired... then i tried google chrome, same thing happened, also certificate had expired with explorer... i immediately became suspicious so checked/reset the clock then did a virus scan which did find and remove the following virus: Threat: Win32 Trojan-gen... i ran malware bytes but was no good, as couldn't find it, so yeah, avast ended up finding & getting rid of it... however, my clock still keeps going back to 2007... i noticed approx 1-2 weeks ago when going to turn off the pc, that microsoft were sending update parcels through, i was suprised as i thought they weren't supporting xp any more?... and now i'm having probs with my clock resetting itself to 2007... coincidence or A. are microsoft sabotaging xp for people who still wish to use it? or B. was it the Trojan virus that did this damage to the clock before being removed or C. some other possible explanation?... anyway, i too would like to know how to get on top of this clock resetting issue, i'm sure its not a battery issue as i had mine replaced last year... hence will be watching this thread closely, hoping someone out there has a solution? thanks.

when you replaced the battery last year i bet you used your fingers to hold it instead of rubber thimbles/gloves.
this would shorten the life of the battery dramatically. the simple solution is to replace it again and this time handle the battery properly.
this is a common mistake a lot of us make thinking its just a battery, but the terminals are unshielded and in close proximity, which means they are easy to short. just a thumb touching across both terminals is enough to reduce the life expectancy.

i found it out the hard way after 3 battery changes in 24 months. either that or they were crap batteries from the local £/$ store.

no i didn't do it myself, a friend who repairs pc's for a living did it for us.... i just picked it up when it was done, i presume he knows about this too, will ask him though, and get him to put another battery in it at the same time, just to be on the safe side... thanks a lot for the help Hexit :)  ...ps why do you think misrosoft are still sending us updates for xp?

because they need to. it still has a huge market share, that relies on xp to run there businesses.
not providing security updates could potentially cause millions in lost income which microsoft could be held accountable for, if the flaw was bad enough.

wow, that's interesting, so all these people that raced out and brought new operating systems was actually totally unnecessary?

in some respects yes. but in reality xp has had that many updates its more patches than anything else. its got to the point now there putting patches on top of patches.
windows needs a rewrite from top to bottom even with there new gui its still the same old clunky mess under the hood, with lots of new flashy gfx but thats about it.
if you want to take advantage of the slight improvements in optimization and newer gfx api's then you need the latest o.s. if your happy with xp then use it till your not.

There are no more XP updates. You can continue to download the old updates, but there are no new ones. If you have Microsoft Office or some other Microsoft product set to receive updates via MS updates, those will still come through, but no updates for the OS.
