Do I need water cooling for i7 4770K?

I'm building a gaming PC, and going all out on the CPU. If I use an Intel i7 4770K would I need water cooling? I would prefer not to have it, is there coolers that can keep it cool enough for cheap?

It depends on how high you want to go with overclocking. If you're looking for a mild to moderate overclock, the CM Hyper 212 Evo is a good choice. For more intensive overclocking, the Noctua is your best bet.

You are correct. Many people don't take advantage of reading reviews, but end-user reviews are a GREAT way to find out if a product is any good or not. We, as the end-consumer, have nothing to gain OR lose when reviewing an item, so we tend to be completely honest. It's not a sales pitch or advertizement. It's just our own personal experience.

Good luck with your project! I also have an i7-4770k. I don't know if you already have it and are just wanting to add another cooler with it or you are yet to buy it, but you will fall in love with it. VERY solid CPU. No. Water cooling is, for the most part, unnecessary. It's only worthwhile for very aggressive overclocks. If you don't plan on overclocking anything, the stock cooler will be plenty to keep your CPU running as it should. If you do plan to overclock or for whatever reason want to lower the temps on your CPU (longevity or whatever), there are plenty of air-cooled heatsinks that do a great job. The Coolermaster Hyper 212 is a popular and cost-efficient choice. That's what I use on my 3570k, and with a modest 4.0 GHz overclock (18%, 0.6 Ghz increase), it stays around 65C even under full load in the summer heat. Noctua is one of the best, but the value ratio isn't as good. Tom's has quite a few air cooler reviews that are worth looking at, if you want to get a feel for noise, price, and performance. The only thing you should be mindful of is how much clearance your case will offer. Some large heatsinks won't fit in smaller cases.
