hdmi out to Dvi-d in

I have a Dell laptop with HDMI out. I have a monitor with DVI-D in. I tried using an HDMI cable to a DVI-D adapter which didn't work. The monitor said no signal. Will I have to buy a special cable?

Is the port on the monitor single or dual link? Does your cable match?

It's dual link. the adapter I plugged in the monitor was dual link. I then plugged the HDMI cable in to the adapter & the computer. I used the same HDMI cable I use to connect my computer to my television and there is no problem with the signal there.
