I'm helping a friend upgrade his PC and need some help picking out a good CPU that allows us to keep his same motherboard. I'm looking at the i7 4770k right now. Overclocking ability is not an issue as he has no interest there.

Solution
The LGA 1155 socket is the socket that came right before the now current 1150, so there is a very good option of CPU's that will fit. I'll have to know the motherboard model number to be certain, but there is a very real chance that an i7-3770 will fit. That is the strongest processor made with an LGA 1155 socket. And for future reference, the "k" on the end of some models only suggests that it is an unlocked processor and can be overclocked. They are generally around 20 dollars more expensive than the standard locked CPU's. Since your friend isn't going to overclock, it is pointless to spend the extra money. Just get a regular CPU with no "k" at the end. :)

Can I get the information on the MOBO?

It is impossible to put an i7-4770k in the same motherboard as the i3-2100. They are completely different sockets. You will unfortunately have to either choose a processor that was built around the same time that has the same socket and chipset as the i3-2100. Give me your motherboard model number and I will tell you what the most powerful processor that you can get is. The only other option is to replace the motherboard as well.

Don't know the motherboard details just yet, he's coming over tonight with the tower so I will have more information then. All I have to work with right now is his dxdiag print out.

::EDIT:: I see what you are saying about the i7-4770, i misread the i3-2100 as a LGA1150 socket as opposed to LGA1155

Yea they are different LGA configs, so no go.
