Old laptop memory upgrade incompatiblity between memory modules?

Hello

I have an old Dell Latitude C600. I upgraded the memory to 512 using two 256 modules. The module details are:

Module 1
Kingston

Windows generally seems fine, but one applications seems to go ape.... when loaded constantly redrawing the screen and I have to force closure of it.

I have run CPUZ on it and the results are below. On the memory SPD tab only slot 1 has info in it. Slot 2 appears greyed out. Is this further evidence of a problem?

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. The memory you have is compatible with the system but if it was purchased refurbished or remanufactured I personally wouldn't trust it. If CPU-Z is not letting you see information on the second module it's possible that it's not seated correctly. Sometimes laptop memory needs to be pushed in and out of the slot a few times to scratch the contacts slightly in order for it to make a solid electrical connection. I recommended "exercising" the added module by pushing it in the slot a few times and then see if it is detected properly. If not, then you should try each one at a time in the primary slot. If the system does not post with one of them that is the problem child. If it works with either...

Thanks for the reply Jewel,

I have cleaned both RAM stick contacts reseated them and systems clears POST, but in CPU-Z only the stick in slot 1 shows details in the SPD tab. CPU-Z reports system has 512Mb of RAM. But one application (a simple 3D CAD app) constantly redraws the screen very slowly, forcing me to terminate the app to regain control over PC. the CPU-Z report with the RAM sticks in opposite slots to my initial post is as follows:

It's Lego Digital Designer. I think that it is actually drawing very fast rather than slowly as I said in me initial post. I have run memtest+86 5.01 for a couple of cycles on both sticks of RAM separately with no errors detected. Had to use fail safe mode otherwise application crashed on me. I booted from CD-r into DOS to run the memory test.

I'm sure that I ran LDD with two 128Mb sticks without issues, other that it was slow, and a lot of disk thrashing.
