Let me first apologize because i know this is kinda ridiculous.

I'm the computer guy in my family and my girlfriends genius uncle gave me his laptop before he went back to Boston for another semester at MIT. This is what he gave me.

An HP Pavilion G6-2249wm with no paper work, no receipt no serial number, no service number, no product key for the windows 8 that was suppose to be on it, no identifing characteristics at all, just the laptop and the charger (he claims he lost everything else. I know its not a "hot" laptop because i was there when he bought it.)

I turn it on and the comp tells me there is a hdd error. So i plug the hdd into my personal computer and it doesn't even recognize the damn thing. I'm not familiar with windows 8 but i had a copy of windows xp laying around so i put in the disc. at that point i was able to boot the start up and format the hdd...long story short, now i have windows 7 on the laptop and i cant get half of the drivers to install. The HP support site doesn't even have the damn usb drivers and when i finally found them i installed and only 1 of the three ports works.

Buying a fresh copy of windows 8 is my last resort because i hate giving Bill Gates a dime more that i already have.

Has anybody else had this problem? Would Linux be a better choice?

Any help/feedback is much appreciated

As you probably saw, HP provides only WIndows 8 drivers for this laptop. So, identify the devices you have no drivers for, and from their Hardware IDs in Device Manager (DEV and VEN numbers) try to identify the manufavcturer. There is a good chance HP have Win7 drivers but for another laptop using same devices.

Check with HP what was the original software installed, and get recovery media from HP (it will cost you $15-20),
Since Win8 licence key is stored into BIOS, there is a good chance you can revive your laptop.

As for Linux: It all depends what you plan to do with that laptop. JUmp over to Linux/BSD section on the forum, there are lot of threads dealing with "What Linux should I try / install"
