I bought a ssd a while back and my friend, whom i payed for the deed, agreed to install win 7 ultimate for me. However here we are about 30 days after that. So what now? Beg acer for a recovery disc? call microsoft to get nowhere? or install linux? The only real issue i have with linux is that i play games mostly on my laptop, and through steam at that. Thanks in advance for suggestions. Btw the laptop in question is an Acer aspire v3 771g 6814, but i have added an ssd with the 750gb spindle drive still there as storage.

Any Steam games you own that have a Linux version will also be available in Steam for Ubuntu BTW.

Now might be a chance to beta test Steam OS.

Otherwise, just download a trial of Windows 8 for now. They are plans to release a free copy of Windows 8 in the future.

Or; Ubuntu 14 is out. It's not a bad environment, and worthwhile to learn how to navigate Linux. Steam is again, available.

1. You laptop came with a license number for windows. If you reinstall that same *original* version of windows and enter that number you will have a legal OS. Ther shud be a sticker on the laptop with the number.

2. Report "your friend" to the local authorities and contact the Better Business Bureau.

Wow quick replies. The steam os sounds like a fun idea along with ubuntu. However i had windows 8 on this laptop when i got it, also the underside contains no product key. S/N for the laptop, model number, and SNID but no windows 8 key.

further to that, the free copy of windows 8 is a 90 day trial for developers, its not free.like was mentioned by the other posters, find your key (the laptop had to have had one at one time),find out what version of windows its for,and download and install said version. ultimate is probably the most pirated version of windows 7.

Ah. That makes it a little more difficult; MS is rather annoying in their policies regarding Windows 8 discs for OEM customers.

EDIT: The correct SHA-1 hash for a Win8 x64 ISO is this: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4

If it matches that hash, then it's the same file, no matter the source.

Any hardware change detected by the MS Validation system will flag your copy of Windows.

The recovery disk may also fail because it detects a hardware change, and the recover partition no longer exists. Just FYI.

It's better than 0 days. There is a planned free version of Windows 8 being released, I assume along the same timeline as the latest patch.

From what I understood of the OP, it's a laptop. And it does take a lot to render a key unworkable.... I have changed MoBo and CPU without an issue. You can actually change everything as long as ya don't do it all at once. Activation servers kinda wipe the slate clean after a period of months....at least that's the way it was last time I found myself with a blown MoBo ona defunct platform (1156) after a user came to me with a botched Hyper 212 install..... actually had 2 peeps do that within a cupla months.

you say you installed an ssd,so do you still have the old hdd with your operating system on it? you can always install it to find your serial key. trials are just what they are trials.after the 90 days what are your going to do? the same thing you would have done before wasting your time with a developers trial of win8-----bought one. that aside where is the hdd that originally had your os on it?

So... do i call acer and try to explain to them what happened and hope they give me my key? Or call microsoft? Also as to more in the linux/steam, does the steam os provide everything a distro of linux would? As far as updates, installing apps, etc. Oh and does it support every game on the steam os?

No, my original hdd that came with my laptop i wiped clean and it is in my laptop with my ssd. My laptop has two drive bays for expansion. So my ssd has a fake copy of windows on it and my original hdd has the data i don't put on the ssd.

In the future..... run Belarc Advisor on your system and when done save a copy of the file and print it out..... not only will it have the correct descriptions of all ya hardware, but it will also list ya security status and all your software license numbers....put away both electronic and paper copies for safekeeping.
