I want to upgrade the system I have now (xp, pentium e2180) with an SSD and windows 7, with an eye to migrating to a new motherboard/cpu combo in a year or so. Can I get away with purchasing an OEM copy of win 7? Do I need to spend the extra money for win 7 pro with the XP support? I typically use free versions of programs, such as open office or retired versions of adobe photoshop, but I would be very sad to lose civilization 4.

OEM is good for ONE set of hardware..... if you change too much hardware at one time, you can deactivate your license.
