Hey this is a first time question, long time reader situation. So I apologize in advance for any misunderstanding with how the forum works.

I'm looking for advice on a upgrade I'm thinking about for Socket 1366 to Socket 1150.

I currently have the following parts;
- EVGA 141-BL-E757-TR LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX X58 SLI LE Intel Motherboard
- Corsair Dominator 6GB PC3-12800 DDR3 triple channel memory kit
- Intel Core i7-920 2.66GHz Quad-Core Processor
- Xigmatek Dark Knight II CPU cooler

I want to upgrade to the following;
- MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
- Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
- Intel Core i5-4670 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
- Corsair H80i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

This upgrade will cost $907 dollars including the cost for a Samsung EVO SSD 250gb.

I need advice on the compatibility, overall performance/price ratio and if these parts are arguably the most reasonable upgrade from my current setup. Also if the motherboard is the best i can buy for the $200ish price tag....

------------------------------------------------------
Other parts in short.
Antec 1200 case, Evga gtx 660 ti graphics card, WD CavBlack 2tb and 1tb.

If this is for gaming then YES it will be worth the upgrade. If doing video editing or similar work you may want to look into the Xeon E3-1230V3 which is basically an i7 without an iGPU but really they'll both get the job done if doing things like editing regardless, just one will get it done faster than the other. At this point in time there is almost no difference between a Haswell i5 and Haswell i7 when it comes to gaming (in most games).

My main concern is that will the performance be noticeable upgrading from the i7-920 (2008) to the I5-4670...even though I lose the hyper threading which in my belief is what has allowed the 920 to perform so well since 2008

Benchmarks aren't always 100% accurate but they do show that the i5-4670 is generally a better CPU for gaming. If you're worried about losing hyperthreading then the Xeon E3-1230V3 is an option coming in at $250.

I think now is the time to upgrade. Although if you wanted to wait, the Haswell refresh is expected sometime during the middle of the year.

I do not recommend the above board. I have not had the best of luck with asrock and Asus boards are generally a lot more solid.

For your needs I still say the Asus Z87-A is your best option. Also @Calledwarrock I didn't recommend a B85 motherboard. While they are okay H87 and Z87 are better options, especially for as little as $30 more for the Z87-A.

That video you linked...um the opening statement about the mobo being a b85 chipset (business class chipset)...just kinda killed the mood for it.

Intended for gaming use...so this might not work well enough to cover the desired goal.

I ended up thinking the MSI is a good board to shave some cost off my upgrade.

@CalledWarrock why would the unlocked i5 work better with the MSI board.

Cheers for the help guys.

the unlocked i5 is meant to be used on z87 Motherboard
