Desperately need an experts help, ive bought a new monitor, after my Dell E207 WFP finally died of old age. The new one, a Dell U2414H, doesn’t have a DVI outlet or a VGA outlet, it came with a mini Displayport to a Displayport lead. Dell’s tech support was absolutely abysmal and suggested I get a HDMI to VGA converter. I ordered one from Amazon, it arrived today and isn’t what’s needed……would someone, with a lot more knowledge than I have, please tell me what I need to get to link the mini Displayport on the Monitor to the Dell Dimension 8400 PC with a DVI and a VGA outlet.

Many thanks for any help and info that can be given.

Well, Correct me if i am wrong, But if i understand correctly. You have only displayport connection in your screen? AND you only have DVI AND VGA connections in your computer?

If i am right, why dont you just buy a Displayport to VGA adapter or DISPLAYPORT to DVI? Here's a link:

As you said, the displayport connection is on my screen? And i have DVI AND VGA connections on my PC. The link you gave goes to Startech’s DisplayPort Converters and clearly states their converters link DVI monitor to a DisplayPort output on a computer.
I need to link the displayport on a monitor to DVI outlet on a PC.

I have been reading posts and reviews all over the internet and I think a cable with male DVI plug on one end and a male HMDI plug on the other will work, which ive ordered and hopefully it’ll arrive tomorrow.

Thanks for the help its now working to a point, using a HDMI to DVI Adapter Cable, from Amazon and it only cost £ £4.49, http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001TH7T2U
But I’m still having a problem.
The monitor hasn’t come with a XP Driver, and I get a warning notice every time I start my PC (Dell Dimension 8400). Being a complete PC novice, I asked on the Dell forum for help and advice, just to be told by the moderator “There is no Windows XP support for our newer monitors such as this U2414H. Dell only provided a Windows 7/8/8.1 driver. The U2414H User's Guide also only references Windows 7/8/8.1.”……some help.

This is no way to run and business and stay in business.

Can anyone please give me some advice, how I can get a driver or do I really need one, will not having a driver damage the monitor or PC.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

Not having the driver will not damage the monitor or PC in any way. The only issue you might experience is not being able to set the full resolution. The driver just tells the OS what it can do basically, but monitors now automatically send this data so no drivers are needed.

It's been awhile since I've used XP, so I'm not sure how the auto-detect works with monitors. If you are able to use the full resolution that the monitor is capable of, then don't worry about it.

Kekoh, thanks for the quick reply and info. Knowing it’ll not damage the monitor is good to know. But, I also want to know how to get rid of the warning message when I start the PC. This new monitor has given me nothing but trouble since the day I unwrapped it, for which I blame the Dell sales and customer support departments, It isn’t really compatible with an old Dell PC, without a HDMI outlet and runs on XP, which they should have known and told me so.

Can you post a screenshot of the message? Depending on what type of message it is, there might be a way to suppress it.

Thank you Kekoh, I don’t know how to post a picture on this forum but this is what the message says.
“Can not install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware.

An error occurred during the installation of the device. A service installation section in this INF is invalid
Click Finish to close the wizard”

I did manger to post a picture on another forum where I asked for help.

There is a rough workaround that should work.

Click Start > Run
Type Services.msc
Right Click "Shell Hardware Detection" and click Disable (If there is no disable, use Stop)
Basically just turn that service off.

There will be some effects of this though. If you ever plug in new hardware, it will not automatically detect and install. Also, if you put a CD/DVD in, it will not autoplay, you will have to manually open the disc from My Computer. To avoid the hardware detection issue, you could always enable the service again. You shouldn't be plugging in new hardware very often so I don't think this will have too much of an effect.
