7.1 headset vs. stereo headset for gaming

I'm new to gaming and first person shooters but would like to try playing Battlefield 3 multiplayer.

If I have a stereo headset and am up against people playing with expensive 7.1 systems like Astro A40 or Turtle Beach, will I still have a chance of winning or will they have the upper hand because of their better 7.1 sound system?

I've got a pair of quite (to me) expensive HIFI headphones, Sennheiser HD 600.
I'm thinking of using them along with some kind of microphone to play BF3 multiplayer.
But I'd like to know if my odds of surviving and of killing others will be lower when I'm using just a stereo headset instead of a 7.1 headset.

Thanks!

it will be lower, but you will at least have a good time dying( just kidding, not) Most 7.1 are virtual surround like my G930. Dependent on game those with 7.1 will have the advantage of knowing what direction the impending threat is coming from. So in short, yes your odds are lowered, however you should still be able to participate in a reasonable competitive capacity with your intended hd 600 and standalone mic. Remember the 7.1 is not equal in all game titles.

Thanks, Gee Bee :)

Hm, I can use the HD600 and standalone mic for starters.
Then if I later find out I'm really enjoying myself playing these multiplayer games, I can get a 7.1

Are you satisfied with your G930?
What sound card are you using for it to work?

it has it owns virtual usb driver. Now my experience has been all good, but i've read of quite a few who say otherwise. It appears the problem lays with issues between the head set and wireless receiver on pc. I changed the channel on my router to 11, and don't have those disconnect problems. In fact i'm still connected on the other side of my small house, i only get disconnected when i go outside to hang the washing. The sound quality itself is very good, the bass is a bit weak but easily adjusted via software. The controls once your use it are great. I can change between stero and surround in one sec, same as in adjusting volume, muting mic (there's a visable red led on the mic to show same). I've set mine to either launch set software or skip music that i don't want to listen to at the time. All in all for the dollars spent i'm very happy with my purchase.

Hope that helps some
