I know this is the second time I'm writing about this on this forum, but this time, apart from the regular clanking noises I get from running games, I'm also occasionally getting clicking noises and grinding noises from my pc, no matter what state the pc is in.

More about : strange noises coming

Hi diwang99,
there are only a handfull of moving parts on your pc , you need to determine where the noise is coming from,
remove the side panel and see if the noise is coming from a case fan or a hard drive or the cpu fan or the graphics card fan

grinding\clicking noises, ouch. most likely hard drive i believe, yikes.
Clanking noise, well that it more likely fans rubbing significantly on something they shouldn't. Often the wires powering the fan. I've seen that one plenty of times on larger top exhaust fans.

There are only a few moving parts on a PC. The power supply, the fans and the hard drive. That being said check your temperatures, check your hard drive for errors since this is an indication of a failing hard drive and make sure your fans are clear of obstructions. The power supply will go out if it is bad.

Make sure your fans are rotating smoothly by looking.

Good call. Not just top fans, either - I've had it on side fans and even GPU fans in small cases.

So, basically, assume hard drive, hope for fans.

You have a wire rubbing up against a fan some were. Open it up and turn it on. Then locate were the noise is coming from and see if a wire is stuck in a fan.

Te other thing is you may have a fan that is going bad. If the bearing wears out it will make a grinding noise that sounds like this...

My temps are very good, here's what speed fan tells me:
GPU:45c
Temp1:37c
temp2:59c
temp3:19c
HD0:41c
Temp1:30c
Core0:35c
Core1:32c
Core2:36c
Of course these temps are when my pc isn't working hard.

all these theory's are possible even likely , only way to know for sure is to take the side panel off your case and listen for where the noise is coming from to determine the cause of the noise

I agree.
Something to be aware of though when exploring to pinpoint problem/s is:
Clicking and grinding noise brings back bad memories of quickly failing hard drives.
Clanking is nearly always fan related.

"The pc isn't under warranty, but it's a university pc so I can probably replace it.." <From Other Post>

The other thing is this could be a laptop. This could be the CPU fan is dirty. In either case we need more info to go on.

let us know where noise is coming from

I checked, it came from the center top of the computer, shaking and patting the computer stops the clicks and grinds for a couple of minutes.

and when I play games, it rattles and cranks.

is it a fan in the roof of the computer or the cpu fan on the motherboard

if not sure put your finger on the cpu fan and stop it from spinning for a second or two then and see if noise is still going with fan stopped , you wont do any harm if only for a few seconds
that is the fan in the middle of the motherboard

okay I'll try that

If it is the fan in the roof of the case , do the same stop the fan from spinning with your finger see if noise stops

Stopping the fan doesn't stop the noise, there's still the clanks and shouts.

Will restarting the computer help? I haven't restarted mine in 3 weeks or so.

no it will not help
ok we are getting somewhere it is not a hard drive because the noise is coming from the roof of the case , it is not the cpu fan
try stopping the fan/fans in the roof of the case see if the noise stops

to be sure put your hand on the top of the hard drive and see if you can feel any vibration coming from it

I stopped the fans in the roof, the sound stops and the computer is fine now.

as for the hard drive, I can feel the hard drive vibrating and when I put the case back together it also vibrates.

on that fan in the back of your case will be one and only one lead coming from it to inside the case this is its power lead , you need too follow it back to see where it connects to the motherboard tell me when you find what i am talking about

I wanted you to do this so you know where to unplug the fan later to remove it.
watch this video , it will show you how to remove the rear fan and how to put a new one into the case , it is very easy to do,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqT4eNrja0A
make sure to turn off your computer before you attempt this and or turn off the switch on the the back of your power supply.
i personally would not use the rubber mounts he used in the video i would just put screws back into the new fan , they screw into the plastic like wood screws , this is normal
when you unplug the fan and remove the fan screws and take it out of the case you need to measure how big the fan is from side to side that is the frame outside to outside it will be either 80mm , 92mm ,120mm or 140mm
when you know this you can order a new one or simply take the old one to a computer store and ask them for one the same size , screw the new one back in the case making sure the air is blowing out of the case not into the case , if you are not sure which way it goes spin the fan with your finger and feel which way the air blows. once you have it screwed in simply plug it back into the motherboard where you unplugged the old one and you are good to go

Replace this at your leasure now that you know what was making the noise ,
If you took it in for repair they would charge you a lot of money for a fan that is cheap to buy and a ten minute fix.
I hope this has helped you
Hopefully soon you should soon be enjoying a nice quiet fan and get some sanity back with peace and quiet instead of that annoying noise
