My computer is going on to be about 4-5 years old now and I'm considering some upgrades if they will significantly boost my performance for gaming purposes.
Current specs:
Windows 7 64bit home premium edition
GPU: AMD Radeon hd 7870
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 @ 3.4ghz (not black edition so no overclocking)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 - (link) http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3272#sp
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 Ram running at 1333mhz even though it supposed to be 1600 but blue screens when I try to increase it.
Current GPU Drivers version 13.12

I'm not exactly the best geek for hardware and I'm getting many mixed results when trying to cross reference information regarding new CPU's and how well they would or rather should be performing, but I don't feel like I'm getting as much performance as I should with what I got.

Main issue that bothers me and why I'm looking to upgrade my Motherboard and CPU is that when I play games such as Elder Scrolls Online, SMITE, LoL, Wildstar etc. (most new games these days), I get a lot of stuttering and FPS drops that make me not want to play anymore even with settings at minimum.

When running fraps or any other FPS monitoring program, my FPS is constantly jumping, for example while playing Elder Scrolls, if I stand perfectly still and don't move I'll have around 50-60 fps, but as soon as I get into combat and have to turn the camera and aim and move around it drops to 20-30 and the game stutters as if it can't keep up with my movements. It happens a lot in SMITE as well and other similar new age games and I'll more often than not miss my skill shots due to fps delay and stuttering.

I am just unsure at this time as to what is the main cause of the issues if it is solely my CPU and motherboard combo or a compatibility issue or Ram speed issue or hard drive speed issue(5.9 windows experience index value, generic 500GB hard drive).

If it is my CPU/Motherboard, which would you recommend for a small budget that would greatly out perform what I have now? I'm locked in around $300 for a budget and I'm seeing that any Intel mobo+CPU will most likely hit me for a minimum of $400 for an i5 3570, but the AMD stuff is a lot cheaper but I feel like I'm getting the cheap fake Rolex that probably won't really satisfy or enhance my experience enough to make it a worthwhile investment if I go with something AMD.

I'm unsure if anything AMD CPU would be a good enough performance boost to satisfy me or if I really should try to find some money lying around somewhere to be able to afford an i5.

I'm very thankful for anyone who reads all this and is willing to help and give any advice towards my predicament :)

Ok, so recommendations: If you don't have a GFX card, you'll need to get one. Go for an nVidia GTX 7**, any of them that fit your budget. To be honest, if you want to upgrade your CPU, you'll need to reinstall Windows and also need a higher budget. I've got a CPU buying guide here: http://youtu.be/z_EoCIekBms

Check it out if you want to get a new CPU, though you should get a GFX card first.

Upgrading my GPU is out of the question. I already have a Graphics card, not sure if you missed that part, sounds like you are telling me to get a graphics card in general and think that I don't have one at all? I have an AMD Radeon 7870 as I listed above.

Ahh, I kind of skimmed a bit of the article. I would upgrade the CPU, but make sure you upgrade to a CPU that fits. Also, just a recommendation, you'll have to reinstall the OS, so you may want to get a new hard drive/SSD to put your OS on, to keep all of the other stuff.

Still looking for some options or suggestions towards what could be slowing down my performance and what would be an acceptable and substantial upgrade to think about getting. I already know about an i5 3570 being the best choice, but I don't have the money to put out for that at this moment.
