I have a an old gateway laptop MX6956. Came with windows XP MCE. I wanted to format and reload the operating system. I backed up everything I needed on the computer. The system came with a recovery CD (it says operating system disc, but won't boot from the CD, only to recovery options, not recovery console). When I try to do a full format restore, it tries to pull info from the recovery partition. Problem is, it gives the "Load needed DLLs for kernel message" and won't boot to windows, not even in Safe Mode. I thought I'd get around this by just upgrading to Windows 7, but when I tried, it gets stuck asking for drivers for disk drive. Any options here?

for clarification, in the end I want windows 7 on this laptop as a clean install, and am not worried about losing all data previously on this computer.
