Hey everyone,

I'm a video editor and I just got done watching Linus's excellent video on how to make an editing PC. For the record, I've been using a gaming PC with various hacks to config files on Premiere to take advantage of my GPU's CUDA capabilities, a 660Ti.

In the video, he rigged a Quadro K4000 for display, but slotted in a GTX 780 as well. He made no mention as to why he did this or what the GTX 780 would be used for - I assume it's for it's CUDA performance.

My question is: how do you rig a Quadro and GeForce together? Is it advisable or recommended? Why wouldn't just a single Quadro card work? And does it beat a combination of TWO Quadro cards together? Any insight would be really appreciated!

Cool. Which cards do you have and which do you plan to get? Amazon's return policy allows for experimentation. They don't charge, and return shipping is free. :D

Oh, man. You've posed my exact question since Linus put up that video - "The ultimate video editing build guide." I know exactly which one you're talking about.

After watching it, it literally spend hours and hours during the next week searching for the way to get those cards to work. Most of what I found was a mix of people saying various things: "No" without an explanation, people saying "no" because the cards have different drivers, and people saying "yes" buy you'd have to plug the monitor into the card you want to use in different situations.

The only confirmation I found that people have actually gotten this working was that people would say without explanation, "I have that setup, and it works fine for me." So, it seems that, if you can't get Linus to answer the question himself, then trying it out is the best way to go.

If you do attempt this yourself, please post. It would contribute meaningfully to information on this topic. Thanks!

I wish I had $900 to burn, because it definitely seems like something worth talking about and shedding light on the situation.

From further digging, I saw nVidia stating that they do not recommend putting in the two cards together, due to various compatibility issues. But since when do technophiles listen to the manufacturer? ;)

If I do pick one up, next paycheck depending, I will do my best to tinker around and make some sort of guide here.

RobCrezz, were you informing me of that? What you say is the whole reason for the discussion in the first place. Have you watched the Linus build video we're talking about?

I asked about what he has now and what he plans to get because he mentioned $900, and I wasn't sure what products the cost was associated with. I didn't know whether he started ordering anything yet.

Whoops, I didn't mean to select that as the best answer! I'm still a newb here :p

Eggz, I currently have a GTX 660Ti. It's aged fairly well, I run two monitors - one WQHD and the other 1080p. It plays all the newest games fairly well on high or even ultra - I'm not part of the whole max settings craze so it suits me pretty well. Trouble is, when I built the rig I was still learning how to edit with Adobe Premiere and their graphics suite. Since then I've become to incorporate Avid's Media Composer 7 into my work and they don't support GeForce/Radeon cards at all, only workstation graphics.

That said, it still runs beautifully but I would love it if I could get that extra oomph from it. For most quick projects I use Adobe anyways and the render times are beautifully quick thanks to the Mercury Playback Engine, but for projects which are 20 minutes+, use 4K footage from Red cameras and have large project libraries, I need Avid's stability. And it's been more of the latter than the former.

I'm not quite ready to rebuild my rig - it's only been 18 months since I built it. It's VERY gaming oriented however and I need to improve some key areas - the most notable being the graphics card.

10 bit output would be nice, but I don't do a whole lot of advanced colour work or edit for the big screen so it's not terribly important to me.

Any ideas what he did to rig it together though?

It was a reply to the OP about Linus's video.

I dont think you have to do anything special really drivers of different nvidia cards usually play together fine.
