Hi everyone! I've been using my Creative SB Live! audio card for years on my old PC, and I was happy with it, but I have bought a new PC recently with Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2 with Realtek ALC887 onboard audio card. Since the MB is very small, my graphic card takes too much space, so the only PCI slot on the MB, so I don't have the space for my former (SB Live) audio card.

My question is - is there a significant difference in (output / recording) sound quality between these two cards?

Thanks in advance!

The Realtek onboard sound chip is HD audio and will sound better then the old Sound Blaster Live and where the separate sound card may have access to some added features , the audio playback and recording of the Realtek will be better.

That's debatable. Everyone says the dedicated sound card is better.

However I have the same audio chip on my motherboard. Right this moment I am listening with a pair of Grado SR225i headphones, and the sound is astonishing. Yes most of that is due to the headphones, but there is no denying the Realtek® ALC887 is capable. I can see where the sound card is letting go though.

I am thinking of opening my own thread about this because I am considering a DAC to add to my PC. Right now though I googleing to find out how good the Realtek is, and found your thread.
