Cutting the wire will void any warranty and if you do not snip it at a good spot it can catch on the fan or short out agianst your tower.

I cut the led lights on the stock fans on my rosewill blackhawk case.

What fan are you looking it, might be able to suggest a similar price/performance one w/o a fan. The fractial design ones are good if you dont need pwm

What size of fan do you need?

From 1-10 (10 being highest) what is important to you:
CFM (airflow) - ?
dB (noise) - ?

Do you need a normal 3pin or 4pin pwm?

120mm
CFM - Good, but I'm starting to think Static Air Pressure is what I need. Been reading about it. The Blue-eye has good SP and its doing well.
dB - As long as it's not high, like 50 dB. Don't link me to that PC Corp fan thats like 250 CFM but 60 dB

It doesnt matter if its 3 pin or 4 pin. Show me one for both please.
