Hello Toms,

I'm helping a friend build a completely budget oriented system based around the 760k. IN order to try and make this system as budget friendly as possible, we are considering cases with pre-installed power supplies. Now I've heard all the horror stories about these PSU's, but are they really THAT bad? The system likely won't draw an excess of 200w in total, so I don't think wattage would be an issue. A few questions here:

1) In a situation where the power supply fails, would it be possible to do damage to components?
2) Will this power supply likely last more than 3 months?

Thanks all,

Eyedelogy

I would recommend stepping down to the 750K to save costs and it generally has lower temps especially if you're using the stock cooler.

I would not recommend using the PSUs that cases come with unless they are really nice and expensive cases with reputable PSUs in them, and even then I don't. Fault Power Supplies can most /definitely/ cause damage to other parts of your system, I have experienced it myself.

I would recommend picking this up. It is affordable and very well built, and is built by Seasonic.

Last more than 3 months? Most likely. The problem is the power supplies in those cases don't really follow quality control like the better units do. You can get one that lasts for 3 years (unlikely, but my moms computer still works lol) or you could get one that blows in a week. The problem is poor parts, especially the capacitors.

When a power supply dies, it can do anything from simply not work anymore, to shorting out and frying the entire system. Again, the lower the quality, the higher the risk of the latter happening.

What kind of budget are you looking at, and what all does he/she need? I can put something together with acceptable-quality parts for you to take a look at if you like.
