XP computer home
If I run my system recovery discs I made when the computer was new
I would lose my personal files.Would the computer work alright without them and could I
put them in when I use them again?Or could I just put files in later.
I'm not going to be on the internet much with the XP computer just when I
have trouble with my W-7. It has been slow lately and I thought running the system recovery might speed it up and clean things up a bit. Also what's the easiest way to
put things from my XP to my W7?

Your personal files have nothing to do with the OS working alright or not... Just back-up your files with the Backup Utility in the drive properties / tools. You can back them up to an external hard drive, a second partition, a CD-R/DVD-R, a USB flash drive... and easily access them from Windows 7.. that's if by "things from my XP" you mean personal files.

An alternative solution to recovering the system is doing a bit of cleaning and scanning... see if these sugestions work before doing a backup and system recovery. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1863469/slow.html

Thanks for your input.. I did use the system recovery and I had some problems.
Afterward I can't find security center no firewall. I try to update and it says can't do that for xp & 2000.
I can't understand that. Got any ideas?

They obviously were not installed with the system recovery... you may have to borrow a Windows XP CD of the same edition to type SFC /SCANNOW in the Run command or in a Command Prompt window... this will install missing or corrupted system files, programs, and features from the Windows CD. And if that fails, you can repair install Windows XP... just recover the product key with Keyfinder so you can type it in if necessary during the repair installation.

Support for Windows XP will end from Microsoft by April 8th, but they may have already retired it from Windows Update... or you may have SP2 Recovery files... if so, you should install Service Pack 3 before Windows Update can install later updates on your XP... Service Pack 3 can install the Security Center and Firewall but Windows Update will probably not... these have to be installed from a CD... either from a Windows XP CD or a Service Pack 3 in CD or .exe installer file... it's faster from a burned SP3 CD. See if executing Microsoft Fix it 50777 to turn on automatic Updates helps in any way.

Windows Update does not start in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000

You could remove your personal files as above and install a Linux system to make use of the computer.

You can run the system from a Live CD until you're sure you want to use it, then install it from the same CD. Drivers will not be an issue and if the PC can run XP, it will be able to run any version of Linux. Try PCLinuxOS from www..pclinuxos.com.
