So, about to buy an I5 and wanted to know, which one is better in the long run? I do not want to have to upgrade for a couple of years. Any input would be greatly appreciated! The two procs are Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K, or the Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54670K .

If you're set on an Intel I5 then you should look at the 4670K. You can overclock it for more performance with an aftermarket cooler. If you're not interested in overclocking then get the 4670.

The 4670k.

Either one will work just fine. Any performance differences would go unnoticed. If anything the Ivy Bridge uses less power but that's about it. I'd say go for whichever one you can find the cheapest.

The 4670k is newer and performs about 5-10% better than the 3570k when at the same clockspeed. However the 3570k can often overclock a little further than the 4670k, compensating for the performance difference.

In either case you will want a Z series motherboard and an accompanying aftermarket cooler. For the 4670k you will need a LGA 1150 motherboard & cooler, and for the 3570k you will need an LGA 115 motherboard & cooler.

If they're priced around the same, grab the 4670k. If one is cheaper than the other grab that instead, there will be no notable performance difference.

Any chance you have any information on weather a video card should still be used with either processor or should I give the onboard graphics a chance? if so, can the graphics portion of the processor be used for something other than graphics processing....along the lines of giving the processor itself some power back? I hope that makes sense.....thanks to all who have replied, this is great information and I really appreciate it!!!!!:)

If you are playing non graphically demanding games, then the Intel HD 4600 in the i5-4670k could be okay. But I am talking about non graphically demanding games. Like Minecraft. I can play Star Trek Online with the Intel HD 4400 on my laptop at 1920x1080 with graphics set to low for decent performance, but I would need to set it to minimum for better performance. I used the Radeon HD 8850m GPU to play that game on my laptop.

If playing games is the purpose of the build, then I highly recommend you buy a GPU. The absolute minimum would be a Radeon HD 7750. Not sure which of the Radeon R7 GPUs would be similar, and I can't remember which nVidia card offers similar performance either.
