very slow pc

i bought a pc from ebay (win 7, 4gb ram, core 2 duo 3ghz, 500gb hard drive). the pc is so slow most applications won't load. the seller said it could be due to unmatched ram speeds, what do you think it could be?

Perhaps the reason being that it is a slow PC? What's your cpu? If you have two different ram speed installed the better one will be held back and run at the same speed as your slower one. Have you consider a clean OS installation?

Basically age, would need more info, but sounds like Win 7 may be the newest thing there, the Core 2 Duos came out about 2006, you mention 4GB, if DDR3 would guess 1066 maybe 1333, and quite possible it DDR2...and good chance the DRAM is mismatched, many of those came w/ 1GB... A possible good thing is if it's a Core 2 8400, those cam at 3GHz stockl, but they OC well, could get a good cooler and should be able to take it up to around 4 GHz

You should determine what ram and speeds you have and check your hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status and specifications (IDE or SATA 1/2, 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm). If everything is working OK you should not have any problems running Win7, even with the older hardware. You either have very slow memory, or a very slow or failing hard drive, or heat could be an issue. Piriform Speccy is a good program to determine your hardware specifications and HWMonitor for voltages and temperatures.
