Trying to find something in the $150 range, tentative max of $180, as I don't see need going higher than that. I've looked at the ASRock Z87 Extreme4, ASUS Z87-A LGA, MSI Z87-G45 Gaming but not such which to go with. I've also looked at the MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming and GA-Z87X-UD4H but I don't see why I'd need to spend that much. I know Asus has a fantastic track record but MSI and Gigabyte have had great reviews recently. I also see people going for the Extreme4, but I've heard bad things about the audio. Can anyone help me narrow it down? I know most would probably recommend the Hero, but I can't justify spending $200 when there are other great options for less

I'd go w/ one of your first choices, the Asus Z87-A, it's a great mobo (and yes I would suggest the Hero, it's well worth the money, have mine in sig 
)

If there was a $50, even $20 sale I would get it hands down, but I haven't been convinced it worth the extra cash

yea I've read lots of good things. At this point my "biggest" (I use quotes because its not really a big one) concern is it has alu892 as opposed to a 898 or 1150, but it shouldn't be a noticeable difference if I'm just gaming right?

Depends on much much you are into the audio, the ALC892 isn't bad, and could pick up a sound card if desired
