Hi, I have a late 2011 MBP that is running OSX Mavericks.

The sound suddenly stops working on my laptop for some reason. It usually happens after (not instantly) I plug in headphones. 2 things usually happen:

1. When trying to use the sound up/down buttons, the image that shows the volume (as shown below) pops up and changes as I press the button, but the usual 'popping' sound doesn't happen. I can't hear any sound through my earphones and speakers even after repeatedly plugging and un plugging the earphones.

2. The same image pops up except it has an 'x' on it and won't let me change the volume.

Restarting my laptop fixes it usually, but I don't want to keep doing that. Yes, I have gone into system preferences and checked that all the sound settings were right, but still no sound.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I tried those methods, and it worked ... for a while. It kept coming back after 3-4 days and although i can easily fix it by the mentioned methods and simply restarting my laptop, I don't want to keep on doing it.

I plan of factory resetting my laptop soon. Would that help?

Before you do a factory reset, try holding down option while booting and rebooting into the recovery partition. From there, try the "Reinstall OSX" option. It keeps all your data intact while simply removing the OS.

If that solves nothing, try a reset.

Have you physically inspected the jack for dust or anything else that would impede the jack's ability to determine the presence of headphones? That jack is pretty sophisticated as it doubles as a headphone jack and optical audio I/O. Mine would occasionally light up the optical light for no reason. The jack can also accept "smart" headphones, third button, microphone, etc.

There is usually a very brief delay when the machine switches from the built-in speakers to the headphones. If the speakers are not working, you can try to play audio while the headphones are unplugged. Put on your headphones and if the audio begins playing immediately, without a moments lag, then the machine has not switched the output source. The machine think there is something inserted in the jack, as if you never unplugged the headphones.

The volume control popup with display the X when the machine believes you are attempting to use the optical or alternate audio interface.

Take a vacuum to the headphone jack and entire I/O section, avoid using canned air or anything that could cause the dust to get pushed even further into the connector housing. This should be done periodically and doubly so if you are constantly mobile or prone to dirty environments, have animals.
