Why PC is unresponsive/slowdown?

I use window 7 DELL laptop. When I usually open certain files on my PC, it operates very slowly which can take about 10 minutes for the first time. Finally, it ends up with failing to open the file. Next time I open it, it goes normal to open it. Is it due to virus or overloaded of documents? How can I fix it?

Go into system configuration and see what is being loaded up at boot, turn off any unnecessary programs. Uninstall any un-necessary utilities Use a reputable antivirus and anti spyware program to check for infection of your machine. Also run a defrag program on your HDD (if you have an SSD then dont defrag).
