My pc budget is BETWEEN $1000-$1500 and which ever build i watch they say to go for i5 4670k. how much performance boost can we get from overclocking and is the overclockable i5 better than a non-k i7?

Solution

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ well what do you think? top notch system with core i7 and o/c ability . thre are compromises that can be done in case you need OS and monitor!

No, I'd rather go with an i7 non-K than an i5 K edition. The i7 is way more powerful, and overclocking the i5 will 1) decrease it's life span 2) increase it's temperatures and 3) increasing the chances of getting a hardware failure. So rather than buying the i5 4670K and a CPU cooler, get the i7 4770 and use the stock cooler, which is more than enough. It should be at about the same price.

it depends on the use! i5 is the best gaming option for the money.i7 has 4more threads and 2mb more cache memory which has a greater impact on multitasking operations, picture-video editing but less impact on gaming.(there are games though, that take advantage of the extra resourses, multiplayer ones mostly.!) ,still an o/ced i5 results on a better performance than a stock i7! so with less money can have better performance! finally as a gamer i5 is good and an o/ced even better, if you also do other demanding stuff while playing, or running professional aplications, i7 is your choise!

Complete bunk.

Mine has been at 4.4ghz since release day, with proper overclocking you get NO negative issues.

Do your homework, get a proper aftermarket cooler and don't look back.

In most games the oc i5 should win handily, and in work stuff the oc i5 should still be around the same performance as a stock 4770.

Well, DX12 was just announced, and it will take advantage of hyper-threading. Now, I don't know to what extent, so I can't say for sure that an i7 will perform better in games than an i5, but if you want to future-proof your build, I would definitely go for the i7 if you can afford it.
