Okay so my budget is tiny because i have very little savings so far :/
But the plan is to do a cheap setup, make some money, then do a final setup...
like a draft copy and a final copy...

So basically id like to setup an automated backup service for files on clients PC's.
these clients are your average joe by the way, my mum, my mate, you get the idea...
On top of that id like them to be able to access their files at any time from anywhere to manually add or remove more files as they please :)

now i have been looking at 'owncloud' software to make it happen, and its test run on ubuntu server went very bad (i blame this on i have no idea how to use linux)

so basically ive been posting around forums and everyone says its too big of a project to help with?

to start off, i will use a laptop with 'freenas 8' or 'owncloud' then just plug some External HDD in with USB.
it will connected via ethanet port to my router which is fiber optic by the way.

Q:
1) what specs on the laptop should i be using here?
2) do i need WD Red/Green 4TB or will the standard Seagate 4TB do?
3) anyone have any idea how to successfully use ownclod server?
4) you got any other tips to give me?

OwnCloud has a low requirment

2) do i need WD Red/Green 4TB or will the standard Seagate 4TB do?
If you use 24h/7 days I recommend WD RED or sometimes Seagate

3) anyone have any idea how to successfully use ownclod server?
ex.1)OwnCloud. You can use your laptop

4) you got any other tips to give me?
I recommend OwnCloud (free private cloud). You can install for your laptop/pc. Easy installation and configuration.
