Same price currently at amazon.co.uk.

Which one would you choose and why? Any comparisons between these 2 online?

WRONG!, i would buy the r9 290X, meeh actually i would buy 290 and invest in one later and crossfire those. Here is why:

"Price-wise, the R9 290 is closer in price to the GTX 770 than it is the GTX 780. There is a $70 price difference between the GTX 770 and R9 290. However, compared to the GTX 780, the R9 290 is a whole $100 less expensive than the GeForce GTX 780. Performance-wise, the R9 290 is on par with the GeForce GTX 780. The R9 290 is a much better performer than the GTX 770 or Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. The R9 290 is providing the performance of GTX 780, at $100 less cost. The value favors the AMD Radeon R9 290 in an epic way. The Radeon R9 290 provides the most value for single-display gaming on the market today."

Link: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/04/amd_radeon_r9...

The Radeon 290 is on the same level as 780, and R9 290x is even better, i would buy 290x or 290x2

You choose.

If the two cards are the same price, as stated above. the gtx 780 is the better card performance wise, and also runs cooler which means less fan noise. The 290x surpases the 780 performance wise, runs really hot, but since bit coin it is now more expensive than the 780. But the 780 and the 290x were made to compete with one another. The 290/280x were made to compete with the gtx 770, and again since bit mining the 290 and 280x are comparable prices to the 780 but performance comparable to the 770.

Sucks, amd cards are really great, but since bit mining, they are price competitive with nvidias better bracket

290x=780>290/280x=770>280=750i/760

Hahaha, sorry. But that is so wrong....hahahhaa
The 290 is actually on the same performance schale as the 780, 290x beats it. And btw buy a 290x from msi or asus and you wont have heating/ noise problems

That's as of March 4th of this month/year. If you want I could find another 20 or so professional reviews and paste those websites on here to. Im pretty sure toms website has at least 5 difference reviews putting 780 on top. Nothing going for the 290x, well except for user zickaesome.

Only way I would ever go 290x is if it was msi lightning version, and at same price as a Evga acs 780 sc dual. Which will never happen. Never had good times with any other msi gpu, evga acx sc duals or a few asus in which ive only used water blocks on.

Oh really?, Show me. Here is a link and a little quote

"the R9 290X took the lead with an average of 67fps; the GTX 780 was narrowly behind with 62fps. In Crysis 3 at Full HD, the R9 290X maintained its narrow lead, edging a single frame ahead with an average of 66fps, with neither card dipping below a minimum of 57fps at any point."

And again, EITHER of these cards is overkill if not playing on a resolution of 2560x1080, the Radeon 290 or 770 is enough for todays plays at 1920x1080, upgrade with one later sli/crossfire to run even higer res. AND with the 290 you get a more bang for the buck then 770 and it's closer to 780. the best buy with money and performance included is 290.

More memory 4,096 MB vs 3,072 MB Around 35% more memory
Better floating-point performance 5,632 GFLOPS vs 3,977 GFLOPS More than 40% better floating-point performance
Significantly higher pixel rate 64 GPixel/s vs 41.4 GPixel/s Around 55% higher pixel rate

How the hell can you tell me the 780 is better?????????

Lower TDP

CPU boss score, which im guessing is where you got your specs from, give the 290x a 8.7 and the 780 an 8.9. Hmmmm.

Toms own article's stating the best gpus, give the 780 over the 290x. Hmmmm.

How the hell can you tell me the 290x is better????????
AND with new directx 12, NVidia is going to run away from the 290X

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1951330/gtx-780-29... heres a pole where 780 again beats out the 290x

AGAIN, here is another link, showing the two cards blow for blow, yet the 780 taking the lead
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2013/10/28/c...

HMMMMMM.

Again heres another video and forum. Video shows some performance tests all done while under water. And even under water the card still is 10-15 degrees hotter than the 780, so msi cooler or not the 290x is hot. Oh and the 780 again takes it on a performance scale.
http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/92563-r9-290-vs-gtx...

You should really just google both cards, because that's all I did and every single site minus a few give the 780 the better, and those few said 290x by the smallest margin, but that's not taking into account the oc version of evga which according to reviews and performance tests done that show a 5-10% increase in performance on the evga sc model vs the reference.

So, im really just trying to see here now you think the 290x is better, when we'll say 95 out of 100 articles and performance tests run favor the 780 vs the 290x. Well congrats zickawesome, your amoung those 5% that think things the other way. Congrats

*edit* oh and mantle, is only on a few games, directx 12 should fix any discrepancies between software wise.....and physics????? I know people that switched to NVidia just because of that knowing mantle was coming out, now that's weird. yey mantle on 5 games, sweet. Oh wait directx 12 and nvidias own software as well coming out soon, plus physics and other nvideas own software already been out for well a while now. hmmmm**

Thank you for your replies!

Facts are:
*I don t want to go even 1 cent above 400
*I need a card of less than 300mm length
*NO SLI/CROSSFIRE
*My monitor is 1080p
*I want the graphics card to be future proof for the next 2-3 yrs

I m narrowed my options to the following; which is the more performance-cost best card? Should I get 770 and sell it in 1-1.5 yr for a better? Should I get 290 and keep it for the next 2-3 yrs or in order to manage games in very good settings and in 1440p i will need something between 780/290x?

ASUS OC 770 - EVGA SC ASX 770 cost around 260£

ASUS 290 cost 335£

EVGA SC ASX 780 - MSI 290X cost 400£

I have evga gtx 770 sc and I love it. It should run 1440p and ultra around 60fps, otherwise high around 80's 90's. Plus in 2 years just add a second 770 for sli and then you'll be in titan black territory. That's what I did and ill never look back.

To be honest Im always been using nVidia cards and I recommend them. They are about same performance but with 780 You get all these Phys-X,3D vision,TXAA and GPU boost 2.0 that overclocks your GPU to its maximum performance when you are playing like Battlefield,Crysis or some game that has heavy graphics. Also it runs much Quitter and cooler.

I'd recommend the evga 770 sc model. That way your saving a good chunk of money, almost enough to buy two right now. The card will run your single monitor just fine at ultra settings on most games. Then when you save up another $50-100 just pick up a second and you'll be at better than a 780 or 290x, all for just about the same price.
