Need advice on upgrading RAM / OS / HDD

Hello All

I'm a complete novice when it comes to understanding the ins and outs of a PC, so all and any advice is welcome. I'm attempting a series of relatively low cost upgrades to my machine, to do Design related work on (PHOTOSHOP / C4D / RENDERING) before stepping out into the abyss and building a new machine from scratch. Currently my system is;

Intel® Core 2 Quad Processor Q9450 (2.66GHz, 1333MHz, 12MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1
4096MB 1333 MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [4x1024]
1.2 TB (2x 640 GB) Serial ATA (7200 Rpm) Dual HDD Config Raid 0 Stripe
Graphics 1GB ATI Radeon 3870 X2 graphics card
16X DVD+/-RW (Read/Write DVD, CD)

I am considering an upgrade to;

OS to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (purchased)
4 GB more RAM to max out the 8GB limit my mobo imposes
SSD on which to install OS / Adobe Creative Suite / C4D

Can anyone offer any advice as to;

- What RAM would be suitable to purchase? I think replacing the 4x1GB sticks with 2x4GB sticks would be the most sensible right? But im apprehensive about going out and buying something I'm not sure of.
- Will an SSD be compatible with my system, or will I have to remove one of the 2 HDD that are currently in my machine.

I'm guessing the general answer will be that my machine is past its sell by date, but I would like to see if i can inject some life into it, before scrapping it.

Any advice welcome.

Goto http://www.crucial.com/ and do the free scan. It will tell you what your RAM and SSD options are. It is the easiest way for people who may not be sure to be really sure. We use it in the agency I work for often on old machines because it is quick. Or, if you're feeling ambitious you can look up your mobo handbook and do the research and that will give you a wider array of information and possibilities, but honestly as this is as you say "past the sell by date" why bother getting the sweetest SSD and RAM you can find that will work for your system. Just use Crucial it will give you lots of buying options that will be compatible using the scan my computer option.

GEE BEE - My computer is a Dell XPS 430 - motherboard being 0G254H

CLIDE - Yes, I will be running that Crucial test tonight, to see what it welcomes. Im quite happy to forego the SSD if its not going to add to my user experience, but currently trying to work on the machine with Vista is a nightmare. I figured Windows 7 & design software running off an SSD would enhance the experience substantially.

MARK - Does this mean you have two gpus in SLI? - Im sorry, im not sure how to find that out, as I say im a total novice, how could i find that out? Im pretty sure its not two cards, its just the name of the card that ends in X2. Its a 'dual GPU'? Also, I'm uncertain of whether i have spare SATA connections, if any at all. With regards a complete wipe / refomat, I'm totally happy for that, as i have backed up to external HDDs.

there are several variations of 430. Leaving many possible variables unanswered.

You have sata 3gbs connections (enough to notice a difference, especially in access times)
The two mechanical drives could be switched to use as your main file retention, although in raid 0 there is no redundancy whatsoever.So if one drive fails you loose everything. If you backup elsewhere that shouldn't be a problem.

The x48 can support 16gbs ram, so two x 4gbs is a major improvement for design related work.

The core 2 quad will appreciate the extra ram in the intended workload.
The jump to 7 from vista is an important one also. Many have said, self included that 7 is what vista should have been.

Is it worth doing?
Short answer yes. Both ram and ssd can be used again in a superior build, as can windows seven. So with that intention you stand to loose not a lot to nothing.

The x48 can run 16gbs
This was on Asus mobo though, so i can't say for sure.
