Hey all. Looking to OC an i7 4770k in upwards of 4+ghz. Looking to cool with enclosed liquid kit (h100i). I just would like some help/input as to what wattage PSU I should be aiming for.

Specs of rig as follows:

i7 4770k
asus maximus impact mini ITX
16gb (2x8gb) ddr3 1600
Sapphire 280x toxic OC
samsung evo 1tb SSD
samsung 840 pro 128gb ssd

So far I've calculated that w/non OC cpu, I would be fine with 760w. If I wanted to push my cpu in upwards of 4+ghz OC (4.2ghz - 4.5 range), what wattage PSU should I actually be looking into?

850/60? 1000?

Help. Thanks :)

Solution
The psu draw form the cpu, even when overclocked is a minor part of the total.
The big draw is the graphics card. In this case, the toxic version is especially hungry, requiring 2 8 pin connectors. They will be found on psu's in the 650w range.

I have no problem overprovisioning a PSU a bit. Say 20%.
It will run cooler, quieter, and more efficiently in the middle third of it's range.
A PSU will only use the wattage demanded of it, regardless of it's max capability.

Whatever you do, pick a top quality unit like Seasonic.

your system even if overclocked (both cpu +gpu) would barely pass 300w of consumption on real world operations so an 650w psu would be more than enough!(amd 280x recommendation is 30A on the 12v rail and 550w psu) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-capstone650 or http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650snlb9

Sweet. Thanks for the quick answers. I think a couple of you forgot to realize I chose the toxic 280x, which I took into consideration when calculating since it's rated best with 750w power.

So, last question: would the 760w i chose be sufficient with my GPU AND the OC of the cpu? or should I go 800w? Otherwise I'm sticking with 760.

Oh, and I prefer my fav brands. It's a Corsair ax760 psu. I haven't read any issues with these psu's (but I have heard of the nonsense transistors on the RM series )

sapphire 750w recommendation refers to generic. a quality 650w will be enough.the toxic 280x clocks are 1100-1150. i ran my 7970 at 1100mhz and i barely pass 300w(hardware measured through plug meter) anyway if you insist ax corsair is superb since its seasonic made! still an overkill for your system!.

Thanks for the heads up.

In either case, it's a rarity I get to own/purchase anything of this magnitude regarding price, let alone hand-build it myself, so I don't really have a means to replace much of anything in case of some freak failure of some sort.

I know OC'ing is already putting me at risk of failure for something, but I can't afford anything more at the moment. So, just to be safe, I don't mind a slight overkill, but again thanks for the input! ;)

you are welcome!:)
