Initially The system shipped with 2x2GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM sticks of samsung (2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600U-9-10-A0).

I saw the tech spec sheet of 7100mt and found that it supports maximum of 16 GB that too in the combination of 4x4 only (with a disclaimer saying other combinations may work)

So i ordered a 4x4 GB DDR3 1333MhzTranscend Memory (4GB-512Mx8-TS512MLK64V3H-1.5v-4GB-DDR3-1333-DIMM-9-9-9-1Rx8 ).

Now I completely removed the old ones and when I put these 4 in all slots. The system doesnt start. 1st the boot menu selector (f10, f9 etc ) flashes for 3-4 seconds and the system reboots. Then the system gets stuck with no display. i tried diiferent combinations of RAm slots. Only my original 2x2 sticks seem to work when not combined with the new ones.

Can any one throw some light on this

Thanks in advance

Got the issue resolved after much pursuation with HP as the system it seems was under warranty. The existing RAm sticks (2 x 2GB) were 1R type. S o I was trying 4GB sticks with the same configuration : 1R .

But Even HP Engineers tried different combinations and concluded that 4GB with 2R configuration will only work even though 2GB 1R configuration are working. Weird that they do not have official explanation for why that was happening, but we can logically conlude with infor online that 2R config is faster and hence Intel must have set its motherboard to work with 2R configuration for RAM>2 GB ..i.e 4GB.

Hope this info helps others.

Incompatible RAM plane and simple.

Some boards are picky.
You can go by their list, or try a better brand of RAM.
Unless it has been tested there is no way to know.

It has happened to me a few times in the last 25 years, but is not as common as it used to be.
It still happens though.

It could also be bad RAM, but not likely all 4 are bad, but could be.

However it is strange that in all ways compatibility is ok (HP 7100mt manual; various forums; Intel H57 chipset tech specs doc ) . Could you just show me a place where such incompatibility is mentioned, I will check the worhtiness of it later. Right now i have defend my self ordering the RAM to my organisation and bosses. Till i can strongly defend with a reason, it will project my incompetency in upgrading RAM :'( . Thanks for the quick response though..

Compatibility is not a list of specs that match.
There is a reason that all motherboard manufacturer maintain a list of compatible RAM.
Not all RAM works in all motherboards even with identical specs.

With top of the line Motherboards, and RAM the incompatibility problem is less.

I took a small chance on my last build, as the Gskill RAM I used on my MSI board was not on MSIs list.
Because it was Gskill, and MSI the chance of incompatibility was slim.

I know it is hard to believe that in this day and age RAM can still be incompatible, but it can.

The specs only list a small part of what makes up the whole RAM stick.
