What are the weak spots in this system?

Hello everyone,

I have a question and I thought one of you guys might be able to give me a better look on this situation.

Now I am planning on buying this pc of this used items site (dutch) (marktplaats <-- for people who are interested).
This pc comes with:
- OS: Windows 8.1pro 64-bit
- motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3
- processor: i7 2600k
- Evga GTX 580sc
- CPU cooling: Cooler Master Hyper V8 (Intel & AMD compatible)
- RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB Dual-Channel DDR3 1600mhz
- SSD: 60GB OCZ-Vertex 3 Sata3
- HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1000GB/1TB Sata3 7200RPM
- Power supply: Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W

Now I would like a clearer look on this system and what the weak spots are in this system setup.
I know the Graphicscard isn't all that great, so what card should I use (in combination) with the current one?

I hope that some of you geniuses can give me some good advice.

Thanks, Mees.

Solution
The second type of multi-GPU setup is not popular and i don't believe anyone really does it as it is pointless because the cards cannot work together. It is not for gaming. Simply adding MANY monitors to one computer for something like stock trading. This is NOT what you want.

For 2-way SLI (what you are actually able to do), you would buy another gtx580 and run them together. You would also need a new PSU which is powerful enough to run 2 cards. You WILL NOT double performance of a single card. That is not how it works. You will have about 1.5x the performance you had with a single card.

Your motherboard can only run 2 cards. Your firtst and second PCI lane run at x8/x8 when using 2 cards but if you add another card the bottom slot...
You can ONLY use another 580 is SLI with the current card./ You can ONLY use cards together that are the same. You cannot mix and match. That gtx580 will be fine for high settings in most games. No need to mess with it.

The build looks fine. If anything I would replace the 580 with a 770. Everything else looks good.

First of all, Thanks!

So I googled around a bit and I found that there are multiple multi GPU forms available.
So the first one is Multi-GPU, in this setup you can only use two of the same cards (if I am correct).
The second is 2-way gpu, you can have two different kind of cards, as long as they are the same brand (Nvidia or AMD). The same goes for 3 way or 4 way.

But now why would you choose for Multi-GPU if you could also go for the 2-way gpu, what are the benefits of both?
I also saw that I can use 4 of the same cards with my motherboard, am I correct on that?

Thanks again!

Your firtst and second PCI lane run at x8/x8 when using 2 cards but if you add another card the bottom slot will only run at x4 which means the third card will not really add any more performance. This is not a problem as you should not be running 3 580s anywway.

You have two choices: buy a single better GPU and ditch the 580, or buy another 580 and a new PSU.

Thanks!

PSUs are not that expensive I believe.
So you are saying I can add another 580 sc, but how much will this increase performance?

Yes, a good 750-850w PSU which you will need will run you about $100 or more.

Like I said it will increase performance 1.5x. BUT you must remember that those are only 1.5gb cards. When you have two 1.5gb cards you might think the vRAM will add up....it does not. You will still have 1.5gb. This might be an issue for some modern very demanding games or if you plan to mod games with texture packs and things.

Two 580s will probably be about as powerful as a single 780, BUT the 780 has 3gb vRAM and the 580s only have 1.5gb so that will make a LARGE difference. This is something you have to consider.

ONLY buy a PSU from Antec, XFX, Corsair (not CX, CS, RM), Seasonic.

Thanks, this helped me really much.

I will have a good look around and consider all you have said. I might buy another system, but in that case it will be equal to this one. And I will ONLY buy a PSU from Antec, XFX or Corsair (xD).

But one last question. How much vRAM will I need for forthcoming games?

Thanks again!

If you are gaming at 1080p you want 2gb minimum for a decently powerful GPU like a gtx760 ot gtx770. Anything more powerful than that will come with 3gb. You DO NOT need any more than that for 1080p. For example buy a 2gb gtx770 not a 4gb gtx770 as they will perform the fame at 1080p.
