Hello All.

I have been tasked with doing a secure disk wipe on all our HD before we recycle them.
Have found a few applications that can do this, however what would you suggest to setup a machine where I can connect multiple hd to which will show up as individual drives, is there a hot swap external enclosure I can use? Or shall I get a port mulitplior?

Another issue is most are sata however have scsi drives too and few old ide.?

Has anyone setup something similar before?

How many drives have to be wiped out? SATA drives are not an issue as long as you can connect them to a system, but SCSI drives (those probably are old since SAS has been used for several years) require a controller. For SATA and SCSI, have you considered using an old server?

Edit: You could use an IDE controller for the IDE drives, but you could also destroy them.

Hello

I have about 200 hdd. Various makes and sizes.

Could you recommend hardware and software needed to do this with ease ?

Is there an external bay i can buy to put say 10 at a time.
Can u build a server to do this?

Dban is an option but it takes so long

You don't need to spend a lot of time wiping out drives that were used in RAID mode other than RAID 1 or 10; a single pass in DBAN should be enough. Don't you have an old server that could be used to wipe out the drives? It would need a SAS/SATA external enclosure, but that may be all that's required for the SATA drives.

Unless you have several and they are large, I wouldn't bother with the IDE drives; drilling a hole through the platters before throwing them out is good enough. What about the SCSI drives? Are they very old SCSI drives that are no longer used in servers (again drilling a hole through the platters takes care of them) or are they newer SAS drives? I presume you want to wipe them out before selling them, but they have to be worth enough to justify building a server and assigning someone to that time consuming task. I won't suggest a solution until I know more about the SCSI drives' size and interface (68-pin, 80-pin or SAS).
