5.1 sound problems

i have a 5.1 surround sound i have a optical cable connected to my pc from the receiver but in my audio settings i only see 2ch output why is that ?

You need to encode the audio into 5.1 surround sound via DTS-Connect or Dolby Digital Live, some sound cards support this (Like the Asus Xonar DS and DSX) some mobo's support this. Otherwise, you just get standard two channel audio.
