Hello
I'm using 2 DIR655 (Rev B1): 1 as my main router, and one as an Access Point
I was wondering which router would be better (stronger wifi) to get rid of the AP
I still need gigabit ports though
Would a router that accept DD-WRT give better results than the DIR 655?
I don't want dual bands since i don't want to buy additional adapter on my laptops or desktop
All my clients are wired or Wifi N
Thanks

well, you can always go out and get a standalone access point, then disable wifi within the DIR-655. Take a look at this ASUS model

http://www.asus.com/us/Networking/EAN66/

That might give you better performance, and still let you keep your current router.

Now if you REALLY want performance, look into the entry-level Cisco enterprise stuff - I'm running an Aironet 1040 at my house. It's really pricey (all told, ~$280) but will give you zero wifi issues for the rest of eternity ;)

I do not think custom software will make the router have more range. While some allow increasing the strength on supported models, it also leads to more head and can damage some routers.

I would recommend you check out something like smallnetbuilder or similar to see what has the best range and use it as an AP if you are satisfied with the routing performance on the Dir-655.

Getting a dual band is NEVER a bad idea. Even if you do not use it now, you may be glad you have it in the future.

Yes on the first 2 questions. Haven't got experience with that particular model of wifi router, but in a VERY general sense a standalone accesspoint will give you, at least, SLIGHTLY better throughput. And potentially MUCH more.

Can't say anything about the particular unit you linked to, but that company appears to have a dedicated line of just access points.
