what happens when your son tries to play the dvd? does the computer recognise that its there or not?
if it recognises that the dvd is present then the issue may be with the media player itself. try downloading another media player. if the dvd is not being recognised and you've tried more than one dvd then the problem will be with the dvd drive itself.
