I have a 120 gigabyte ssd built into my computer, but it does not have enough room to store my steam games and all of my other crap. I also have a 500 gigabyte EXTERNAL hdd. Can i boot on the ssd, but store everything else on the hdd? I have windows 8.1.

Yes. The external is through a USB 3.0 I think the external hdd is a western digital my passport ultra.

not ideal... especially if it is a self powered portable external.... it will fail if used continuously...

How easy would it be to upgrade the ssd?

And do you mean that if used for long periods it could shut off and I could lose my data?

upgrading to a larger SSD is easy, use a good cloning tool and clone onto the bigger one remembering to expand the partition to the full size of the new drive.

as to the external, those are built for spot use. meaning, plug it in, write or read from/to it and remove it. in constant use they just fail.

So...If they fail they break? I would then not be able to use it anymore?

in some cases yes... especially the ones that the USB connector is a part of the hdd. the older way was a standard laptop hdd would be attached to a STS to USB card inside an enclosure. That is not how they make them now, so, when the adapter dies, the whole disk is dead.

IF you are going to use an external as an always on drive, build one. Get a (!POWERED!) SATA 3 USB 3 enclosure and the HDD either one like the WD Red (NAS) drives or the new ones meant for Security Camera DVRs (always on drives)

I just saw a portable expansion drive on amazon. Would that work?
