Hi!

Good day! Recently I've been having problems with my Lenovo Laptop shutting down all of a sudden without any warning. My initial guess is that the problem is HD / Temperature related since the laptop gets really hot before it shuts off unexpectedly.

I ran HD Tune Pro and this was the result given to me:

I checked the event logs and noticed this error as well:

Not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

What make/model HD do you have? Is it only during a specific process (like gaming) or after a certain amount of time? Do you have anything to monitor the temperatures of the hard drive and cpu? also, make/model and year of laptop? OS version?

Hi HyNrgy

Thanks for the quick reply. Please see below.

1. Make / Model of HD = It's Hitachi. Not sure how to get the exact make/model so I took a screenshot instead: http://imgur.com/qOyiqrL Please let me know if you need more info on this.

2. It wasnt doing anything intensive. It was just transferring files to another HD. Another time it was just downloading something.

3. I have speedfan and hd tune pro. Do those count? Here are some screenshots of the recent temperatures:

4. Make/Model of Laptop /OS version - Lenovo Ideapad Y470. OS and other info here: http://imgur.com/aJCNUZZ

those temperatures according to speed fan are ok for a laptop. If they get somewhere around 90c and around 100c that is an issue. Most have built in safety to shut down if exceeds certain temp so as not to damage permanently. Did you run any of the s.m.a.r.t. test on speedfan (extended but takes a good while.

Or you can see here ( http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads ). Since hitachi hard drives are part of western digital and try their hard drive test program.

Have you noticed what the temps where when shut down?

IF the hard drive is failing, make sure you make a backup with something like macrium reflect or simply backup data and create your full recovery dvd's/cd's if you haven't.

you can also use ubcd or hiren's bootcd ( http://www.hirensbootcd.org/about/ ) to do some testing without loading windows.

If you do not feel comfortable running a certain test and have not mad backups, FIRST back up, test and repair at own risk

also, I would backup your system as soon as possible (and create recovery cd). If it is true about he relocation errors that showed up in HD Tune pro you will soon have a deadly hard drive failure and need a new one. backup twice, once system backup like macrium reflect free and other just the data.

Reason is that if there is corrupt data, the corrupt data will be copied as well (and if that is part of system files that is why I say "also data" due to you may have to do fresh install, and then may be able (after re-installing programs) import the data.
