Proper thermal paste distribution on CPU?

Hi there!

I've just installed my new 4770K CPU along with an Evo 212 cooler. I've put half a pea size thermal conductor paste in the middle of the CPUs surface area, as advised, but when I put the cooling tower on the unit, there were slight movements on all axes before I finally fastened the tower with the screws.

I'm a bit concerned about the thermal paste not being equally distributed on the surface of the CPU, although the temperatures seem to remain in the 30-40°C interval... is it possible to somehow verify that the paste is in place correctly?

Thanks in advance!

I typically like to spread out the past with a guitar pick (or equivalent piece of plastic), especially on heat-pipe style coolers. If you don't the paste tends to bunch up in the crease around the pipes and doesn't make it all the way to the outer edges. Thats my personal experience though.

I wouldn't worry about shifting too much. Though the way you described it I would probably remove the cooler, confirm the paste is spread evenly/clean and apply new paste.

Thanks for your suggestion! What kind of cloth, equipment would you use to clean the contact surfaces?
